Public Health Ontario (PHO) - Enjoy the sun safely: Protect your skin, protect your eyes: The updated recommended core content for sun safety
This presentation describes the updated recommended core content for sun safety messages in Canada. It will review the evidence and process used to achieve consensus on key facts and recommended protective action statements (e.g., shade, clothing, sunscreen and eye protection) for public education. It is based on a paper published in the Canadian Journal of Public Health (2016; vol 107, no 4-5).
The sun safety messages can be used by organizations with a role in promoting sun safety to form a common undersanding of what is needed for effective sun protection. This presentation will be of interest to those working for skin cancer prevention and eye heatlh protection across Canada.
Presenters: Dr. Loraine Marrette and Maria Chu
Dr. Loraine Marrett is a Senior Scientist in Prevention & Cancer Control, Cancer Care Ontario, and Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. She has held appointments at these two institutions since 1982, filling a variety of roles over this time. Most of Dr. Marrett’s current work concerns surveillance of cancer and cancer risk factors in Ontario’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis populations, as well as research on the relationship between exposure to ultraviolet radiation (solar and non-solar), and skin cancer, particularly focusing on enhancing prevention. She has led the production of a number of reports and monographs, has authored or co-authored well over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and held numerous research grants.
Maria Chu is a Senior Policy Specialist in the Population Health and Prevention Unit at Cancer Care Ontario. She served as the secretariat lead to the 2014–15 National Steering Committee for Consensus on Content for Sun Safety Messages. In her work at Cancer Care Ontario, she has a focus on knowledge synthesis to support system-level cancer prevention activities, including coordinated public education and prevention system quality monitoring. She completed a Master of Information Studies degree at the University of Toronto.
