Occupational Cancer Research Centre (OCRC) - Environmental sources of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants and associated risk of breast cancer in young women: Early results from a population-based Ontario study
In this seminar, an update of the Ontario Environment and Health Study (OEHS) will be provided. The OEHS is a breast cancer case-control study in Ontario women, aged 18-44 years. In this study, blood and urine were collected to measure biomarkers of exposure to PBDE and OP flame retardants. As part of the overall exposure assessment strategy, a database of PBDE in foods and supplements was developed to assess dietary exposures and a subsample of participants was selected to provide household (air, dust, and electronic products) and personal exposure measures. The development of the exposure assessment methods will be described and early results of the work presented, along with preliminary estimates of the associations between serum biomarkers and the risk of breast cancer.
